Friday Rants: Your Software Doesn’t Track Me at a Strip Club

stripclub-350[Note: Every Friday we post a new rant from one of our writers, edited only for typos and spelling. This new series is not for those easily offended or for those who only like to play nice. So read this before you start posting your comments.]

I created X3watch in 2004 to help people stop looking at porn.

The way we did that was to help people bring to a light an issue that was almost always found in the dark.

Thousands of emails came in saying, “No one knows what I look at online.”

The idea was simple and still is.

People need other people.

If we could let someone know where you go online, maybe you would stop. If you didn’t stop, maybe you would finally share with someone else what you have been doing in secret for so long and maybe that feeling of isolation and shame and guilt would start to be broken by discovering for the first time that you could actually tell someone and have a conversation about porn.

That was the idea.

Simple.

A good story requires more than one character.

2004 was easy. We all had bulky Gateway, Compaq, and Dell Computers.

2016 is hard because we have iOS, android, Mac and PC, and you geeks on Linux (which we will never develop for, btw).

I hate spending money on X3watch, if I am honest. Why? Because we can spend and spend and spend and spend and we still won’t satisfy the customer that still doesn’t understand this concept.

Its not about software. Its about people and relationships.

X3watch helps initiate a conversation around a topic that, without it, there would be silence.

I love when I go to churches and they say, “If you are not happy with what we do here, find another church.” Churches that know who they are and what they do, and they are happy to not try and be something they aren’t.

We have a team working hard on X3watch. We spent more then $600,000 on it last year because development isn’t cheap on 4 platforms, but there is a part of me that says if you are using the free version or the paid version and you still want the software to be something it is not, go somewhere else.

Does X3watch monitor Tinder?

Does X3watch track me at a Strip Club?

NO. NO. and NEVER.

Don’t expect software or an app to do what only another person can do.

Our software doesn’t know if you are at a strip club or searching Tinder, but what our software does do is enable a conversation around a sensitive topic with an accountability partner. So, if you can tell your partner you looked at a porn site, you should be able to tell him or her you are struggling with xyz. You fill in the blank.

Don’t rely on us, an app, or software to do what you should already be doing.

X3watch starts a conversation, but you have to take it from there.
